My Brain is too Busy to Decorate

It's time for my very favorite party :)
Amanda is hosting her world-famous Decorating Dilemmas Party, come and join the fun!

Here's the deal.

This is a chunk of my great room.

I know you want to steal this amazing style

It used to house a dining room table, and buffet - both have been relocated because it felt like my GR had about 37 huge tables in it (really it was 2 large tables and a big island, but it was too much). Two weeks ago a piano arrived (thanks Mom and Dad!), and this week we finally finished a project (I know a WHOLE project - I was amazed! ps - it's the cabinet in the corner). So I've accumulated a few pieces of furniture, but that's where the plan ends.

I think my fetus is eating my brain. I cannot come up with a solid plan for this area.

What I know I need to lose:
* plastic play kitchen - heading to Peanut's room
* mismatched red rug - I love it, but not in this room. Right now it's just protecting the floor from the evil-metal piano-bench feet.
* cheap floor lamp - it's actually left over lighting from a project I was doing, it really belongs in my bedroom.
* 10 lbs, at least (oh wait, we were talking about the room...)

I am thinking about adding:
* a sofa table behind the couch - what finish? pale blue to match the newly-completed cabinet?
* a new area rug. Maybe I can make a large rug like Miss High-Heeled? I need some fabric inspiration.
* this chair from my bedroom (and make a pillow with the fabric (clearance score from Ballard))? I'm afraid the gold in the chair will clash with the yummy-yellow walls.

I have 2 yards of the yummy fabric

* architectural print over piano? I already have one, it's long and skinny (Mackinac Bridge blueprint), and very nicely framed...not quite sold on the idea, though.
* recover, or just slipcover, the piano bench with the Ballard fabric.

What would you do? I'm thinking I can only spend, maybe $250...
Thanks in advance, I'm excited to see your ideas!

A very nice little area you have to work with!

Question: do you need a rug for the area, or would it work just to put floor protectors on the bottoms of the piano bench legs? You'd have a lot more options if you didn't need a rug.

I think a sofa table is a great idea. I'd probably just do a wood that would go well with your piano and let your cabinet be the signature painted piece. One bonus of having a sofa table is that you could have baskets underneath it to hold toys. I've seen cool rectangular baskets at HomeGoods, and they don't cost too much.

I LOVE your chair--it's beautiful. I think the fabric would be fine with the yellow walls. As for the architectural print, I'd say take it in there and see if you like it. It sounds beautiful!

Good luck!

1. I love that new cabinet you fixed up. It looks great!
2. I think move the chair in and see how you like it! If it works, make a pillow and try recovering the piano bench.
3. Love the idea of a sofa table. Maybe white or something to match the piano? Bring in some more of the pretty color from the fabric and the cabinet.

Thank you so much for linking up with me. :) :)

Great ideas!!! I think your chair will look great in there. I love the idea of the prints above the piano -- maybe a series of 4 or 9 in rows. Have you seen the ones that Amanda at Imperfectly Beautiful did in her bedroom - they look amazing. She decoupaged different papers on each 9 square canvases or boards and hung them in a grouping.

I can't wait to see what you do!

XOXO

YES to a sofa table! Yard sales are going on or a thrift store one. I would probably paint it white, because it might be too much blue behind the sofa. I think the chair would look awesome with a toss pillow, maybe blue to pull that in. Try the painting over the piano. If you don't like it, maybe an arrangement of plates? I've seen great set ups in blogland with them.

I agree with a lot of the other ideas - the chair will look great, and a sofa table is a wonderful idea! Or a low dresser or bookcase - I love things that have additional storage!

For the area above your piano, have you thought of something less square? Maybe a collection of prints and/or plates in a more free-form arrangement? Like this:

I would like to see the sofa table in white! Art work on the walls...Bigger pieces or a collage of frames. Maybe a new lamp shade also. I feel like with your awesome high ceilings, you need some larger accessories. Love the piano and cabinet. Can't wait to see what you do!

I like the sofa table idea, but I wouldn't do blue behind the blue sofa - someone already said that I know. i would go with wood or white. I LOOOOVE the fabric you chose. GORGEOUS! I would do something really big and bold over the piano. I like Jen's idea of the scrapbook paper thing Amanda did. It was copied from Ballard and turned out great! Here's the link: http://imperfectlybeautifulms.blogspot.com/2010/02/yet.html

As far as the chair goes, it looks dark enough to compliment the walls. I think it would look fine. I would lose the rug and show off your floors. A new rug would eat up your budgeet QUICK! Just put felt on the bottom of the feet, maybe? Your floors are really pretty!

Good luck! BTW, I could stand to lose 20 pounds! Wish that was as easy as moving out a rug!

I so remember that feeling of the fetus eating my brain! I still try to blame stuff I do on preggo brain...it's only been five years...

I agree- no rug. Felt or cork sticky things on the piano feet will do the job. Your chair is dark enough to complement your walls, I think. (I love yellow walls- nice choice!) Use the fabric to make a throw pillow for the chair and cover the piano bench. The sofa table should be nice, I agree that a wood tone like the piano would be nice. I can't wait to see what you do!

Love the sofa table idea -- wood or white. And that plate wall suggestion (ala the nester) is genious!!

What a great little area! Depending on the other woods you have in the room, a sofa table in the same finish as the cabinet would look great. Or if the frame you're hanging about the piano is a colour you could co-ordinate with that.

If you already have a nicely framed print, hang it! Maybe you could find a couple more vertical ones to hang beside the cabinet?

No idea on the rug... is there something on the other side of the couch to co-ord with?

Good luck!

Your post is cracking me up this morning! I think you have some great ideas for the space! The chair is beautiful and I think the pillow fabric has the same yellow in it as the walls? I don't think you'll have to worry about the chair color clashing with the walls. I would recover your piano bench in the pillow fabric too if you have enough! A console table behind the sofa would look great, but I wouldn't do the same finish as the corner piece (by the way, very cool little cabinet!) Maybe find something in wood finish on Craig's list and "pickle" it? Layla over at Lettered Cottage did a tutorial on how to "pickle". It looks really great! As far as the rug, I would do a seagrass rug that has a fabric binding in white. I think if you do a print, it may get busy with the pillow fabric, and that part of the living room isn't huge. Hope this helps. Looks like you got a lot of other great ideas. I love this party!

By the way, my link isn't showing up on Amanda's party (I don't know what I'm doing wrong, aargh!) I would love your opinion on my kitchen. Check it out at www.finesseyournest.blogspot.com

Thanks!

I think the chair would be great! I think a wood or blue sofa table would help, and maybe some blue over by the piano...recover the bench? My parents living room is arranged like that and they have their desk where your piano is, piano on the right wall (out of your picture) and a sofa table.

I think a sofa table to match the new shelf is a great idea. I also think recovering the bench in the fabric to match some pillows would look really great. You could always do some vinyl lettering over the piano, or maybe even a few framed family pictures.

Oh my gosh!!!! I would die to paint that piano a beautiful smashing color to coordinate with your room and to play off your pretty wood floors! We just did a post on painted pianos....and I'm in love with the idea. Of course if you painted the piano you could remove those nasty scratchy piano bench feet with something soft and felted. Another plus!

here are some ideas

If you did it, I would love to see a picture.

You're totally on the right track! As stated, the chair would look great, that fabric is beautiful and would be a great accent with your sofa. I love that diy rug idea! Thanks for sharing- I might steal that one... Also, have you considered painting the piano? It's beautiful as is, but I've seen this done a few times around the blogosphere and I think it would look great painted too.

Yes to the sofa table! I vote that you get one in white then add a grouping of framed prints above the piano (also white). With the money you have left over, I'd add another larger print on the wall with the chair. I can't wait to see what you do :).

Hi! Thanks for finding my little blog! I would say, go for the architectural print. My inlaws have a "music room" much like this (complete with piano) and what really sets it off is some Eiffel tower drawings they had framed. Good stuff.
